Croquet, bowls players hope grass is greener after virus lockdown

first_imgA player in action at Sussex County Croquet Club on England’s south coastLondon, United Kingdom | AFP | The peculiarly British sports of croquet and bowls are taking baby steps to return from the coronavirus lockdown, away from the glare of publicity. Both conjure up images of elderly people pitting their wits against each other on lush lawns, with social interaction a big factor. The government’s easing of restrictions put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19 paved the way for croquet and bowls to resume. The Croquet Association welcomed the chance to start up again, marketing itself as an ideal sport in unusual times.“Media reports on lockdown easing have focused on sports like golf, tennis and basketball, with the glaring omission of croquet, which is the perfect ‘social-distancing’ sport,” it said in a statement.“A croquet court is twice the size of a tennis court, so playing against a member of your household, or one other person from outside your household, is no problem at all.”– Churchill link –Croquet is seen as quintessentially English — wartime prime minister Winston Churchill replaced a tennis court at his Chartwell home with a croquet lawn. But the origin of the sport is disputed by Jonathan Isaacs, chairman of the Croquet Association council.“All I can say is that in the Bayeux Tapestry there is an image of a person with a mallet, hoops and ball so the indications are it came over with William the Conqueror (in 1066),” he told AFP.Isaacs said the coronavirus shutdown had proved a headache but he remained upbeat about the future of the sport.“Fortunately, as a governing body we have pretty robust finances behind us and we had enough money in a contingency fund to be able to say ‘yeah we can see a way through this’ and offer loans to clubs who have problems.“Clubs so far have not taken up any offers and appear to be coping reasonably well.”Isaacs said at his club, Sussex County Croquet Club on England’s south coast, which hosted last year’s golf croquet world championship (the other form of the game is association croquet), members rallied around to help the vulnerable.“We set up a contact rota and phoned them up but most quite frankly are desperate to get back on the lawn,” he said. Isaacs said the main challenge was returning to tournament play but pointed out that one positive was that the game itself “by its definition is an exercise in social distancing”.“Only one person is on the lawn at any one time. With golf croquet, although two players are on court at the same time the etiquette is the non-playing person stands well clear.”– Spanish Armada –Legend has it that famed Elizabethan explorer Francis Drake delayed returning to his ship to confront the Spanish Armada in 1588 in order finish a game of bowls. His modern-day descendants on the greens have had to face a hidden enemy and even though they can now play again, it is not straightforward. Many players are elderly and the over-70s have been advised to continue to self-isolate despite the partial relaxation of lockdown measures.“At least half, if not two-thirds, of all bowling members are over 70,” Rod McBeth, honorary secretary of Sussex County Bowls men’s section, said. The county has 4,800 male members and 2,700 female members.McBeth, 75 next month, said it had been a trying time and patience has been wearing thin.“I am doing jigsaw puzzles but the inaction has driven me round the twist and if I was of that nature I would get depressed,” he said.“However, I have spoken to a lot of club members who are tearing their hair out.”Despite his mounting frustration, McBeth will be steering clear of the green for now. Competitions have been deferred until next year and he is wary of the possible risks.“There is no point in taking a chance for nothing,” he said. “A lot of people who are able to do so will not. They are not sure it is a safe thing to do.”Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Foundation Funds Mobile Apple Classroom for RBR

first_imgLittle Silver – The Red Bank Regional Education Foundation recently presented the Red Bank Regional (RBR) Board of Education with a check for more than $28,000 to fund a mobile Apple classroom for the school district’s world language classes. The funds will purchase a mobile IPad cart equipped with 35 iPads and three MacBooks with a two-year protection program and a voucher to purchase apps that foster the acquisition of foreign language. The new Apple Mobile classroom is expected to be operational in September.“This level of accessibility into other cultures and languages is completely unprecedented,” said RBR Assistant Principal Will Smith, who researched the program on behalf of the foundation. The Apple classroom enables students to interact in the language they are learning in task-based activities such as reserving a hotel room, obtaining weather forecasts or driving directions. Research suggests that the authentic use of language in this way serves as a boon to the language acquisition process. In addition, the Apple classroom will also connect student and staff with foreign language newspapers, pronunciation programs, videos, podcasts, classrooms from other countries and streaming online radio.“The foundation is delighted to fund this very valuable educational tool,” said Paul Noglows, foundation president. “Students will hold in their hands a dynamic new means of participating in a language lesson, thus encouraging a truly collaborative instructional model. Also, since all students at RBR are required to take a world language, this grant will potentially positively impact the entire student body.”Over the past few years, the education foundation has funded nearly $100,000 in grants that have a direct positive impact upon the classrooms, students and faculty of RBR.Additional information about the foundation is available on it’s webpage at http://rbrhs.org/Community/EF/default.aspx or by emailing [email protected]last_img read more

Skiing is simple

first_imgYou stand balanced on the center of the turning ski and pressure it through the turn. At the end of the turn, you switch to the other foot and repeat. You do this on mellow slopes, on steep slopes, in open bowls, in trees, on sunny days and on days you can’t seek the forest for the snow. That’s it. You balance on a ski sliding down a hill.Skiing is simple.I’m only half jesting. Watch a great skier on the hill and notice how they seem to simply stand on their ski riding down the hill. In essence, they are doing just that. The trick to balancing lies in remaining centered and using the whole of the ski’s running surface against the snow. This holds true for any skier at any ability level.Think about it for a second. Running across the ice of a frozen pond, it’s hard to keep your balance. Try to make a quick turn and, boom, you’re down. Running across a field, it’s easy. Run across the same field when it’s wet and it’s easy until you have to turn or stop. Then you have same problems as on the pond. Not in the same extreme manner as on ice, but the control and effort to stay upright falls somewhere between the dry field and ice. If your runners have cleats, you grip the wet grass and turn with ease. If you put on a pair of skates to cross the pond, it’s a piece of cake. Zip.Think about the skates on the pond. It’s easier to skate when you engage the skates against the ice. Just wobbling along trying to stay upright is difficult. Push and glide, the effort returns a semblance of balance. You engage the skate blade with the ice. Stay balanced over the skate and you remain upright. Go too far forward or too far back and boom, you’re down. Plop. Sounds a lot like skiing.Sounds a lot like surfing and skateboarding too.Sounds like any athletic activity. To stay upright, you remain centered. You stay engaged in the action.Go back to a wedge. Find a mellow slope and make a few turns. Watch how to start the turn in a wedge, you have to engage the uphill ski early, before it starts to turn or move into the fall line. To be smooth, you stand on it evenly and glide the ski all the way through in big sweeping “C” shaped turns until it is running across the hill and then step on the other ski, the uphill ski and repeat the effort. As you ski along, still in a wedge, watch how easy it is to turn if you keep turning. In other words, stepping from one turn to the next like you are running down stairs. Never let the ski run in a traverse. Starting a turn out of a traverse becomes more difficult. Now speed up the turns. What happens?Your skis match, go parallel. The parallel turn is a natural extension of the wedge turn. When someone makes a wedge turn, they use the non-turning ski, the ski riding on the inside of the turn, for balance like training wheels on a bike. Once you stand comfortably on the turning or outside ski, you don’t need that inside ski for balance. The faster you go, the more the outside ski grips and the less you need the inside ski for balance. As on a bike, a certain amount of speed is your friend. Gravity pulls us down the hill. A turning ski is working against gravity and converting gravity into turning motion. The more turns you make, the slower  you go. More turns means more of the acceleration of gravity has been co-opted into turns.See. It’s really simple. Stand on the ski. Make lots of turns. Control your speed.Keith Liggett is a Fernie-based writer.last_img read more

ESPN’s Edward Aschoff Thinks The SEC Should Try To Get Rid Of Divisions

first_imgGrades for SEC teams from 2015 season.SEC GradesIf you’re a long-time college football fan, you know that it was the SEC that came up with the idea of having two different divisions and a league championship game – back in 1992. One ESPN writer thinks that the league should reverse course and actually get rid of them.Edward Aschoff has a radical idea for the conference – get rid of the two divisions, pick four or five “permanent” rivalry games and put the two best teams in the title game.Aschoff isn’t a fan of the current 6-1-1 format, and doesn’t believe that having Missouri in the East is helping anyone. He also thinks that doing away with divisions would allow older rivalries – like Florida vs. Auburn – to be reborn. The SEC should fight to abolish divisions in college football https://t.co/lX8xMBaktC— ESPN SEC (@ESPN_SEC) May 4, 2016Obviously, the SEC would need to petition the NCAA to do away with its current system or rules to make this happen. But it’s an interesting idea, for sure. What do you think? Would leagues be better off doing away with divisions and just having their best two teams meet in a league title game?last_img read more
