You’re all set! • Physical Fitness Testing results – From the State Department of Education Released Monday, the report showed a vast majority of Whittier-area students in fifth, seventh and ninth grades could not pass physical fitness tests measuring strength, endurance and flexibility, among other abilities.Among the least in shape were fifth-graders in the El Rancho Unified School District in Pico Rivera, where only 9.2 percent of 997 students were able to meet state standards in all six areas of the Fitnessgram, the measure used by the state to determine students’ physical fitness. And that was up from 6.8 percent last year. The slight jump was in line with a statewide trend in which most California schools saw the number of physically fit students rise by about 3 or 4 percent from a year ago.Not good enough, said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell, who added that “far too many students\ failing to reach even minimal levels of physical fitness.”“A silent epidemic of obesity and poor nutrition is endangering our children’s health and their ability to learn,” O’Connell said in a statement. “This is just one more reminder that we need to rededicate our commitment to turn this trend around.”In the Whittier area, Students in the Whittier City School District scored higher than students from most other local districts on the physical fitness tests. About 27 percent of fifth-graders meet the standard, and 35 percent of seventh-graders were able to pass.Whittier City School District Superintendent Carmella Franco said all district schools received new exercise equipment. Also, more teachers are stressing state physical education standards.“We have in our board policy that students will be physically fit and healthy, with the expectation that it will positively impact students’ academics,” she said.State law requires districts to administer the physical fitness test yearly. It measures six major fitness areas: cardiovascular endurance, body fat, abdominal strength and endurance, trunk strength and flexibility, upper body strength and endurance, and overall flexibility. In the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, the numbers of physically fit ninth-graders actually declined from last year – from 13.9 percent to 12.1 percent this year.About 33 percent of 3,342 ninth-graders in the Whittier Union High School District met all six standards.“Aligning our procedures really did make a difference in our results,” Tryon said. “So the improvement of our scores is what we’re focusing on this year.”To view the results, visit www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/pf.
