With the premiere of Game of Thrones Season Seven being so far away, we’re grateful for any updates out of Westeros we can get. Thankfully, the cast and crew behind the hit HBO fantasy drama were more than happy to share a few this weekend at South By Southwest. After this year, we’ll only have one more season before the show calls it quits. Sadder still, the eighth season will be even shorter than the seventh at only six episodes long. Our days in Westeros are numbered, but I suppose the same can be said for pretty much everyone who lives there.Of course just because Game of Thrones is ending doesn’t mean that’s the last we’ll see of George R.R. Martin’s world. When you play the game of television, you spin off or you die. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said there’s a definite possibility that surviving characters might have their own spin-off shows. No details on what those might be, but Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams immediately shut down the idea of a “Zombie Stark sister” show, according to Deadline. Whatever the spin-off show ends up being, if it ever even exists, Weiss and Benioff say they will not be involved.Ed Sheeran in “Castle on a Hill” video. (Photo: Screenshot via YouTube)Probably the strangest news to come out of the talk was the Ed Sheeran will have a guest role on the show in the upcoming season. Yes, that Ed Sheeran. His appearance was meant as a surprise for Maisie Williams, who has been a fan of the singer for a long time. The showrunners say they’ve been trying to get Sheeran to make an appearance for years, and they were finally able to make it happen for season seven. No word yet on what kind of role he’ll play or what his story will be, so I guess we’ll all find out together this summer. Maybe things in the Castle on a Hill were much more messed up than the song let on. Come July, that chorus will need an update. Now I’m on my wayto incest and murderand I’ll never sayTyrion’s a tiny dancerHe won’t appreciate those jokes, he’ll poke out my throatAnd my head will show upOver the castle on a pike.Game of Thrones returns to HBO on July 16.
