Only Atheists Need Apply

first_img51; He’s a Christian, yes, but he is also a leading American scientist and a harsh critic of intelligent design.  He supports research on embryonic stem cells and upholds Darwin’s theory of evolution completely.  That’s not enough to get Francis Collins off the hook with the scientific establishment.  Both Nature and Science expressed “serious misgivings” with his nomination as head of the National Institutes of Health, even though as the able administrator of the Human Genome Project his scientific credentials have been exceptional.    Collins is open about his evangelical Christian faith, but his book The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, “describes … how he reconciles this with the science of evolution.”4  He used Templeton Prize funds to start the BioLogos institute that discusses issues of faith and science.  His theistic-evolutionary views have drawn criticism from leaders in the intelligent design movement for embracing Darwinism from start to finish and scrambling Biblical theology.1  Collins’s view of theistic evolution leaves little room for God as an intelligent designer.  He remains at odds with intelligent design leaders.  In addition, he will be stepping down from BioLogos for his NIH term.  Leading Darwinists remain hostile in spite of all of these things.  Here are criticisms from Nature last week.2 NIH nominee draws scrutiny: Francis Collins is likely to face funding challenges – and criticism of his Christian evangelism. There are also concerns about whether Collins’s very public expressions of his evangelical Christian faith will affect his job.Steven Pinker, a psychologist at Harvard University, says he has “serious misgivings” about the nomination.  “Collins is an advocate of profoundly anti-science beliefs, and it is reasonable for the scientific community to ask him how these beliefs will affect his administration of the NIH and his efforts on behalf of the scientific enterprise.”Here are criticisms in Science magazine last week.3,4 Although few would disagree with a White House press notice saying that Collins’s work “has changed the very ways we consider our health and examine disease,” Collins does have critics.  Some question his support of “big biology” in the genome project portfolio—with timetables and planned targets—and some are concerned about his outspoken Christian faith.  He raised eyebrows, for example, when he recently launched a Web site, BioLogos, expanding on his 2006 book explaining how he reconciles his faith with the science of evolution.Although many scientists say geneticist Francis Collins will make a superb director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), not everyone is celebrating.A discussion about whether Collins’s very public religious views will influence his leadership of NIH played out on blogs early this spring and again in the past week.  There seems to be little evidence for such worries, but they persist.Richard Dawkins, the biologist and prominent antireligionist, feuded with Collins for mixing science and faith. This spring, Collins raised hackles again when he and several other scientists launched a foundation and Web site, BioLogos, which claims that it “emphasizes the compatibility of Christian faith with scientific discoveries about the origins of the universe and life.”One prominent critic, Paul Z. Myers, a biologist at the University of Minnesota, Morris, who runs the anticreationist blog Pharyngula, faults Collins for suggesting that altruism cannot be explained by evolution and instead came from God.  “Collins has got some big gaps in his understanding of the field of evolutionary biology,” Myers says.  In comments this spring on Pharyngula, others fretted that Collins’s beliefs could influence his decisions on topics such as stem cells and sex research.Jocelyn Kaiser, who wrote the two Science articles, might argue that she ended with quotes praising Collins and discounting the worries of the naysayers.  But her title, “Questions About the Language of God,” and the prominence she gave to the criticisms of Collins (all from prominent atheists), leaves a strong bitter taste of “serious misgivings” about Collins – or anyone in science who espouses Christian faith, no matter how accommodating to Darwinism it might be.1.  See, for instance David Klinghoffer’s blog entries for June 22 and July 8.  His views have also been criticized on Evolution News & Views here for refusing to dialogue with the ID movement, and here because he “handles Darwinism’s universal acid like baby formula.”2.  “NIH nominee draws scrutiny,” Nature News, Published online 15 July 2009, Nature 460, 310-311 (2009), doi:10.1038/460310a.3.  Jocelyn Kaiser, “White House Taps Former Genome Chief Francis Collins as NIH Director,” Science, 17 July 2009: Vol. 325. no. 5938, pp. 250-251, DOI: 10.1126/science.325_250a.4.  Jocelyn Kaiser, “Questions About the Language of God,” Science, 17 July 2009: Vol. 325. no. 5938, p. 250, DOI: 10.1126/science.325_250b.It doesn’t matter that Collins’s theology is incoherent, incompatible with the Bible, and that he would prefer the companionship of Ken Miller and Eugenie Scott over that of Phillip Johnson or William Dembski.  Theistic evolutionists like Collins are unclean.  They are not secular enough.  They don’t understand science.  Any remnant of Christian faith is a profession of “profoundly anti-science beliefs.”  People like this leave room for God (even eensy weensy teeny tiny corners in their world view for God to get involved).  That’s not atheistic enough.  The critics that Nature and Science quoted sound like a Who’s Who of God-haters: Dawkins the campaigning atheist, and Myers the foul-mouthed blasphemer among them.  Eugenie Scott and the NCSE will probably treat Collins like a useful idiot.  He can help their propaganda campaign with his charade about 100% pure Darwinism being compatible with religion (for those who need a crutch).    The Darwin-Only Darwin-Only DODOs show their colors as leftists.  You can spot a leftist by two traits: (1) they are intolerant while avowing tolerance, and (2) they are irrational while avowing rationalism..  They portray themselves as the sole spokespersons for a magic word that commands instant respect, whether or not their beliefs or actions have anything to do with it.  That magic word is science.  For a dose of historical reality, browse our online book.(Visited 13 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

All About Indoor Air Quality

GBA often receives questions from homeowners who worry that some building materials emit dangerous chemicals. For example:We do our best to provide answers to these questions. But if there is a theme running through these questions — and I think there is — it would be this: homeowners are worrying about the wrong materials and substances.Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a big topic. To get a handle on it, we need to break it down into small bites. Here’s how I’d like to proceed:Finally, I’ll share researchers’ findings about which chemicals are most concerning. In most U.S. locations, indoor air is more polluted than outdoor air. According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), “Studies from the Environmental Protection Agency on human exposure to air pollutants show that indoor levels of pollutants may be two to five times, sometimes more than 100 times, higher than outdoor levels.”There are exceptions to this rule, of course. If your house is located near a busy intersection or a location where buses or trucks often idle their engines, the outdoor air near you house may be more polluted than your indoor air. If you live in such a location, increased ventilation may not improve the quality of your indoor air. For the rest of us, however, ventilating a house with outdoor air usually improves the situation. The most important test you should perform is a radon test. If you’ve tested for radon, you’re done. In most cases, further testing isn’t justified. For more information on testing, see “Indoor Air Quality Testing Should Not Be The First Move.”Asbestos fibers. International Financing Available to Reduce Impact of Climate Change

first_imgConsultant with the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), Dr. Oscar Coto, says Jamaica has an opportunity to tap into international financing that can assist with its efforts at reducing the impacts of climate change. This, he said, can be accomplished through advancement of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Programme of Activities (PoA) as well as Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs). “If through a supported-type NAMA, the country can get recognition of some incremental critical costs that are involved in delivering some climate change mitigation, through activities in the country…those resources would be used to support the scaling up of (projects) for a better energy sector, more renewable energy, more efficiency within the society (and ultimately) better living for Jamaicans,” he said. Dr. Coto was speaking to JIS News following a workshop on potential for Programmatic CDM and NAMAs in Jamaica, at the Courtleigh Hotel in New Kingston on April 3. The CDM is one of the ‘project-based’ mechanisms defined in the Kyoto Protocol designed to promote projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement created under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). PoAsrefer tovoluntary co-ordinated actions by a private or public entity that leads to GHG reductions through a number of CDM project activities. NAMAs are seen primarily as a way for developing countries—with financial and technological support from the international community—to make progress in reducing their own domestic GHG emissions. OLADE is providing support to the Government through the provision of technical assistance in order to contribute in the identification of opportunities for the development of CDM Programme of Activities as well as NAMAs. This is in keeping with Government’s activities to reduce the impacts of climate change within the energy sector. As such, Dr. Coto has prepared a report based on a ‘Study on the Identification of Potential Project Portfolios Associated to Programmatic CDM and NAMAs in Jamaica’, which he discussed during the workshop. In his presentation, Dr. Coto pointed to current trends to move from strict carbon financing to a broader concept of climate financing, which includes the NAMAs as an opportunity to assist countries in enabling mitigation activities, both at the policy as well as the project/programme level. Carbon financeis a new branch of environmental finance, which explores the financial implications of living in a carbon-constrained world, in which emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) carry a price. In his report, Dr. Coto noted that it is clear that the country has enacted a series of visions, policies and action plans that can contribute significantly to prepare Jamaica for climate financing opportunities. He argued that from the climate mitigation perspective, renewable energy interventions seem to be very cost effective in Jamaica, and associated climate financing could be attracted to assist in removing some of the perceived gaps associated with the regulatory challenges as well as in mobilising financing and guarantees for private sector participation. “It is becoming clear that the paths for most of the identified and discussed potentials for emission reductions in Jamaica lie within the boundaries of the NAMA mechanisms under discussion in the UNFCCC as a vehicle for climate financing,” the report reads. The report recommends that the country needs to engage in strengthening its capabilities to understand the depth of new climate financing opportunities and risks, assess if the emerging mechanisms of climate financing may be attractive to supplement and scale up on-going activities, and from there pursue opportunities that are cost effective and with ample sustainable development benefits for the country.last_img read more

The celebrated musician has donated 10 million yen to the Japanese Red Cross Society through his own charitable foundation, Yoshiki Foundation America.  “I just saw the news in the U.S. and I pray for those who passed away,” Yoshiki said in a statement. “I truly hope the damage caused by heavy rain will not spread anymore.”The damage in western Japan is staggering, with a death toll surpassing 210 victims and warnings circulating of even more landslides to come. The devastation has been intensified by a heat wave that hit southern Japan, meaning Yoshiki’s generous support is coming at a critical time for those battling to survive the disaster. This is far from the first time Yoshiki has opened his heart and his wallet to help in the wake of a natural disaster. Last year he donated $25,000 to aid Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas, and he lent another $100,000 to the Recording Academy’s MusiCares for disaster relief for hurricane survivors in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. In 2016 he donated 10 million yen to earthquake disaster relief in Kumamoto. Those seeking to support the flood relief efforts in Japan can donate to the Japanese Red Cross Society. Have Hyderabadi cricketers actually been treated unfairly

first_imgVVS Laxman’s retirement came all of a sudden in 2012ReutersAmidst all the debate that took place around the absence of Ambati Rayudu and Rishabh Pant from the Indian ICC 2019 World Cup squad, what stood out most was Rayudu’s tweet. But even more interesting was the retweet by another out-of-favour Indian cricketer – Pragyan Ojha. The left-arm spinner last represented India in Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series against West Indies in late-2013. Interestingly, he was the man-of-the-match in his last Test. Ojha retweeted the comments of Rayudu and added his own views to it.Now, Ojha didn’t reveal who are those ‘Hyderabadi cricketers’ that have been in ‘similar situations.’ But does he have a point when he suggests that cricketers belonging to this proud city have had a raw deal?If we look at the most prominent cricketers from Hyderabad, one can find grievances that all of them can have. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that there is any systematic bias against these cricketers. However, let’s first look at these prominent names and their possible complaints.Mohammad AzharuddinIt is very difficult to have sympathy for this legendary batsman from Hyderabad. After all, many would say it were his own actions that led to his career ending in disgrace. While the courts may have acquitted him and there are not any official sanctions against the former India captain, he still carries the taint of match-fixing. However, he can carry the grouse of not being allowed to play his 100th Test and being forced to end his career with 99. Of course, that is a partisan view.VVS LaxmanOne of the most aesthetically pleasing players in the world and a true match-winner, Laxman’s exit from the team was very, very surprising (pun intended). In 2012, he was picked in the Indian Test side to face New Zealand in a two-match home series. But all of a sudden, VVS announced his retirement. Speculation was rife that he had been told by the selectors that this would be his last series and he responded by ending his career himself. How much truth there was in these rumours, we don’t know. But it has to be said that Laxman’s form had declined substantially in the last year of his career and his place in the team was under doubt. But for hard-core fans of the batting wizard, that won’t be any consolation. Pragyan Ojha (L) put out a tweet suggesting Hyderabadi players getting a raw dealBCCIPragyan OjhaNow we come to the main aggrieved party. Does Ojha have reason to feel hurt by the selectors? He certainly does. The Orissa-born cricketer had become a regular member of the Indian Test team by late 2010 and was acting as a deputy to Harbhajan Singh. But for some reason, Indian selectors convinced themselves that he cannot do well on non-Asian pitches. Every time India needed a second spinner outside the sub-continent, they went to Amit Mishra – be it the South Africa tour of 2010-11 or England tour of 2011.Ojha, in order to prove his worth on non-friendly pitches, played a season of county cricket for Surrey in 2011. Even the former India captain Sourav Ganguly was impressed with his performances in English conditions. But the selectors kept ignoring him and when they decided to replace Ashwin during the South Africa tour of 2013, they went to Ravindra Jadeja and not Ojha. But even before that, the left-arm spinner was getting a raw deal from his team. After emerging as India’s best bowler in the four-Test series against England in 2012, he was dropped for the first two matches of the next series – vs Australia. Imagine the highest run-scorer from a series getting dropped for the first half of the next series. It seems impossible but this is exactly what Ojha faced. His problem got compounded when the ICC decided to crack down upon suspicious bowling actions and he too had to undergo remodelling. But since then, Ojha has made a comeback but without the selectors giving him another opportunity. So, one can understand why he feels aggrieved. Among all the Hyderabadi cricketers, it’s this one who has been treated most unfairly by the selectors and team management.last_img read more

Revenge After Amitabh Bachchans Twitter account hack Indian hackers put actors image

first_imgIndian hackers take revenge of Amitabh Bachchan’s Twitter account hackVarinder ChawlaAfter Amitabh Bachchan’s Twitter account was hacked by Turkish hackers called Ayyildiz Tim, a group of Indian hackers apparently took revenge by hacking one Turkish website on Tuesday.A Twitter handle named Indian Cyber Soldiers, which claims to be a group of Indian hackers tweeted out a screenshot of a website page that shows Bachchan holding the national flag. The image also has “Feel the power of India” and “Hindustan Zindabad” written on it.The group claims to have hacked the Turkish website and replaced the official page with the picture showing Big B. Although it is not clear if it was actually a Turkish website, and if at all it was hacked by the group, many Indians have shared screenshot congratulating the Indian hackers for the revenge. The same Twitter page has a few other old tweets, claiming to have hacked Bangladeshi and Pakistani websites in the past.Bachchan’s Twitter account was hacked on Monday night, by which, the hackers replaced the actor’s display picture with that of Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan. Turkish hackers Ayyildiz Tim had claimed to have done that in the tweets made from Bachchan’s handle. The hackers had made some pro-Pakistan and anti-India tweets from the hacked account. The first tweet that was made from it read, “This is an important call to the whole world! We do condemn the irrespective behaviours of Iceland republic towards Turkish footballers. We speak softly but carry a big stick and inform you about the big Cyber attack here. As Ayyıldız Tim Turkish Cyber Army +++”.”The Indian State, who mercilessly attacks the Muslims fasting in the month of Ramadan, is attacking the Ummah Muhammad in this age! Indian Muslims are entrusted to us by Abdulhamid,” this was the second tweet made by the hackers. While this incident remained a major topic on social media on Tuesday, Bachchan’s Twitter account was soon restored.last_img read more

Interestingly, even in regard to Saif Ali Khan, Emraan said he would like to steal his wife that is Kareena Kapoor Khan.Well, Emraan’s answers on the show’s rapid fire round suggested that either he was really obsessed with other stars’ wives or he was just too desperate to win the hamper, which he eventually did for his spontaneous and bold replies. The said episode of Koffee With Karan also had Mahesh Bhatt as the other guest.
